Can I Add Clickable Links In My OneTake Videos?
Clickable call-to-action links are commonly used to drive traffic, conversions, and engagement. It is normal to expect links added to a video to be clickable, but how this works depends on the video format and where the video is played.
This article explains when links are clickable, when they are not, and how to keep them clickable using OneTake.
Why links are not clickable in MP4 videos
MP4 is a standard video file format. By design, MP4 files do not support clickable links inside the video itself.
When a video is exported as an MP4 file:
- The video can visually show text that looks like a link
- The link text is not clickable inside the video player
- This applies to common video players such as:
- YouTube
- Vimeo
- Desktop or mobile video players
This is a limitation of the MP4 format and not something OneTake or other platforms can change.
What viewers will see in MP4 videos
If you add a link visually inside the video and export it as MP4:
- Viewers will see the text of the link
- The link cannot be clicked directly
- Viewers would need to manually copy the text if they want to visit it
This behavior is the same across all traditional video hosting platforms.
How to keep links clickable with OneTake
To keep links clickable, the video must be played using the OneTake Player instead of exporting and uploading an MP4 file elsewhere.
When a video is hosted with the OneTake Player:
- Links added to the video remain fully clickable
- Viewers can click links directly while watching
- No MP4 download is required
The OneTake Player can be used on:
- Blogs
- Landing pages
- Membership sites
- LMS platforms
- Websites
Ways to share a video with clickable links
OneTake provides two ways to use the OneTake Player:
Direct access link
You can share a direct OneTake Player link. Anyone opening this link will watch the video in the OneTake Player, with links remaining clickable.
Embed code
You can embed the OneTake Player into your website or platform using the provided embed code. The embedded video preserves all clickable links.
Both methods ensure links remain interactive.
What happens if you upload the MP4 elsewhere
If you export the video as an MP4 file and upload it to platforms such as YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, or other video hosts:
- Clickable links inside the video will not work
- This limitation comes from those platforms and the MP4 format itself
- The OneTake Player must be used if clickable links are required
Adding clickable links in the video description
n addition to in-video links, OneTake provides a rich text editor in the video details section.
Using this editor, you can:
- Add clickable links in the video description
- Format text using rich text tools
- Control how links appear when the video is shared
Description links remain clickable when the video is shared using the OneTake Player.
Where this applies in the editor
Clickable links can be added from the Customize Video section, under Video Details, using the description editor. Links added there can be edited, styled, and saved before sharing or embedding the video.
